Enough With the Bottles Already!

Bottled-water_en

Alright, time for some hard fact.  A very small number of corporations and therefore people (who own the majority of stocks in these corporations) own ALLof the water-bottling companies in the world!  That in itself is astounding but much less astounding than the fact that they are making hundreds of millions of dollars in profits by selling people something that should be free to everybody in the world.

In many parts of the world (and if you have internet access and are reading this I'm venturing to say that yours is included), water is almost free and is treated for potability and delivered to homes by a utility company.  In these same parts of the world, water companies are taking the very same water that everybody already pays for to have delivered in their homes and are bottling this water and selling it in a nice plastic container at a ridiculous premium right back to the unsuspecting everyman who thinks he's drinking fresh spring water.  IT'S TAP WATER IN A BOTTLE!

In other parts of the world, parts that regularly experience heavy drought and low water-quality, where people have to make an effort to get clean water, water-companies are diverting water from streams or are damming streams to collect and treat and bottle the water.  Damming causes huge environmental impacts.  Along with holding the water upstream, it also holds the valuable sediment that the water usually takes with it downstream.  This sediment, instead of serving as nutrients for plants and animals, then sits in the reservoir and rots releasing gases and being wasted.  In these parts of the world, something that is in desperately high demand in nature and for people to grow food and keep healthy is taken out of these environments and either trucked away to be sold elsewhwhere or sold back to the people it was just stollen from at prices they can't afford.

Why would you pay all this money to get something you want but can get for almost nothing at any tap (water) and something else (plastic bottle) that you don't want and will be responsible for disposing of shortly after paying $2.50 for it!?!... For the convenience?

Alright, but if this is your reasoning you should know that every time you buy a bottle of water you are supporting men and women that have chosen to make it their job to take something that doesn't belong to them away from people who need it to survive and sell it back to these people who can't afford to pay for it with no regard to the environmental, social and human consequences of these actions.  You're are saying YES! to these actions everytime you fork over the cash for that bottle.  If this is okay with you, go for it.  But if you think its wrong, you have an opportunity to vote with your dollars and boycot these corporations.  In effect saying NO to their unjust ways.

Use a reusabe, stainless steel water bottle instead and a home water filter.
