Green Golfing

Golfer

Golfing feels like a sport pretty close and in tune with nature.  And why not, its an outdoor sport, the hole are carved right out the surrounding greenery and wildlife calls many courses home.  But, in fact, golf is as natural as square watermelons.  Golf courses require lots of chemical pesticides and fertilizers and huge amounts of fresh water to keep those greens green.  And, as previously mentioned, golf courses are quite literally carved out of what used to be forests and marshlands that harbored and supported diverse wildlife.

So golf courses have the potential to be extremely destructive to surrounding fauna and flora.  Thankfully there are organisations out there that are concerned about golf's environmental impact and that are working towards reducing golf's impact.  Audubon International's 'Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses' is a certification program that aims to make golf courses blend in to their natural surroundings by demanding action in: Wildlife and Habitat Management, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, Water Quality Management, Outreach and Education.

Here's a list of Audubon's certified golf courses throughout the world.  Listings for Ontario and the rest of Canada are near the bottom. http://www.audubonintl.org/programs/acss/CACS%20Golf%20list.pdf
