| Scavenge and Salvage | | | We're so lucky to live in Toronto. Where every garbage day has outstanding potential to be a free shopping day. A lot of the furniture in my apartment was picked up off the curb or made of materials that were picked up off the curb. Use your imagination! I love to walk around my neighbourhood on garbage day and check out what's up for grabs. Sometimes the stuff is usable as is! But sometimes a purpose can only be creatively extracted. Either way, keep an eye on garbage heaps and if you're struck with an opportunity to save something from being asbolutely wasted, then get over your social anxiety of being seen picking something up off the curb and do it! Also, don't be so quick to throw things away! Always look to see if you can repurpose something instead of throwing it out. Giving something a new purpose might mean having to learn a new skill like sewing, woodworking, welding etc. but the way I see it, that's great! Don't see it as a chore, see it as an opportunity to enrich your life and expand your mind and abilities and reduce your impact on your environment at the same time. Important Note: Before picking anything up, examine the item closely for structural damage and/or filthiness. Most people throw things out for a reason but then again, you'd be surprised. Nonetheless, if there is damage and it's not easily fixed or washed, think of your significant other or room-mate(s) before bringing it back home... believe me, I would know. |
