It's getting harder and harder to know what's actually in the food you buy and which companies you can trust. The Ice Cream industry is notorious for putting all sorts of preservatives and untrustworthy "modified milk ingredients" in their products. One way to avoid all this bad stuff is to make it yourself! Making your own ice-cream is easier than you think and it's fun (Even if you aren't a kid or don't have any)! Remember, when picking out your ingredients, make sure they're organic and local if possible. Organic Certification is a good way to insure that no harm was done to the earth to provide you with the food you eat. Ingredients: - 1 big container (or large ziploc bag)
- 1 smaller container (or smaller ziploc bag)
- 2 tbsp Sugar
- 1 cup milk or half n half
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 1/2 cup rock salt
- Ice
Put ice in larger of two containers and mix in rock salt. In smaller container mix milk, sugar and vanilla together. Place smaller container in larger container so that the ice envelops as much of the smaller container as possible. Stir the mixture vigorously until it hardens and takes on an ice cream consistancy. Enjoy! Some people swear by the Ziploc method which works the same as above. Don't forget to seal the smaller ziploc bag before putting in the bigger one, then seal the bigger one and shake until you get ice cream. (please reduce waste by keeping, washing and re-using your Ziploc bags) You can adjust the richness of your ice cream by using only milk or mixing milk with heavy cream. You can also experiment with other ingredients and flavours like chocolate chips, mint, coffee... get creative. |
