This film is a must-see for all inhabitants of the earth (no, I'm not exaggerating for effect). Leonardo Dicaprio hosts this enviro-flick but the real hilights are the interviews that form the crux of the film. These include a multitude of scientists and community leaders from around the world and the insight and sense of urgency and hope they provide is at times jarring, inspirational but mainly, it just makes you want to take action. To quote the film itself; "Not only is it the 11th hour [of the survival of humans on earth], it's the 11th hour and 59 mins and 59 seconds..." If there's a film that can illustrate just how urgent our actions and changes in mentality need to happen, it's this one. For those of you who can't stand doom and gloom, I warn you there are some pretty somber concepts but such is the nature of our predicament on earth and we all need to accept and take a certain amount of responsibility for a problem if we want to be responsive enough to find and, more importantly, execute the solutions. As with any good enviro-flick, it's not all sensationalism and scare-tactics. For all its bluntness, I found this movie very hopeful. Many of the independant experts interviewed put a lot of stock in the need for a personal shift in values and in our definition of joy and fulfillment. They believe these shifts will in turn drive a economic reform that will see green products as the overwhelming norm and unsustainable options will fall into taboo. Go out, rent or buy the movie (this is one that you can watch over and over) and spread the word about it. I recommend watching the full interviews in the bonus features... it's worth the time.
