Mike Reynolds is an eccentric architect who may just have the best grass-roots solution to reversing our environmentally-destructive living habits.  He calls them earthships and in "Garbage Warrior" we hear of Mike Reynold's initial experimentation and blunders with his innovative building methods and follow him through the burocracy of being allowed to continue building these revolutionary homes in the US.

Picture a home made of stuff like used tires, plastic and glass bottles and aluminum cans.  Now imagine that this home is not only beautiful and comfortable but also completely off-grid and self-sustaining thanks to solar and wind power, a water-catchment system to use rainwater for all your needs, a grey-water system that irrigates a indoor greenhouse planted along south-facing windows that allow the low winter sun to heat the home.  Now imagine living in this home where you will never pay another utility bill thanks to solar energy and thermal mass that keep your home is comfortably warm (even in Canadian winters) without needing a furnace!

Believe it or not this type of home is not a thing of the distant future they already exist all around the world and the cost of building your own is comparable and can be much cheaper (if you don't need to pay for labour) than the 'modern', compartively innefficient home of today.
