Hyper-Miling; get the most out of a tank.

Hyper-miling is a set of driving techniques and tricks to help get the most mileage out of a tank of gas. It's a whole sub-culture for some people, I've heard of people driving without shoes on to reduce the weight of the car and thereby increase feul efficiency that much more.  A little impractical if you ask me but if that floats your boat go for it!

As I understand it, the main principle of hyper-miling is to pump the gas pedal instead of holding it down to get up to speed and then let go of the gas and let the car drift down to 20 or 30 kph less than your desired speed then start pumping again.  I must admit that I can't confirm if this works because between my gas-pedal-leg's glute and ham-string seazing up and my wife complaining of a sore neck, I couldn't get enough tangible evidence to back this claim up.

But, there are other, very simple and effective ways to get the most out of a tank:

-Keep the car free of clutter and your car will weigh less and be more fuel-efficient.

-When taking off from a red-light or stop sign, don't floor it but gradually allow the car to get up to speed.

-When you see a red light coming up ahead, let go of the gas, put it in neutral and coast to a stop instead of racing to stop.  This practice will also save your brakes wear and tear.

-When driving down-hill put the car in neutral and coast down using your brakes to control your speed.  The engine will only be idling (around 500-1000 rpms) instead of reving at an unnecessarily high rpm (3000-4000) and thereby wasting gas.

-Keep the outside of your car clean and waxed. This lets the car slip more easily through the air and can increase your feul efficiency by 7% (This percentage comes from a study that compared a cleaned, waxed car to a filthy, muddy car).

-When you stop the car, always turn the engine off unless you know you'll be stopped for less than 20 seconds.  Do this when you're waiting in line to purchase gas!

Try these tricks and notice the extra miles on your trip meter when its time to fill up again!
